Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable, safety-focused Terminal Operator to join our operations team at the South Fraser Marine Terminal. This role is responsible for the safe receipt, storage, transfer, quality control, and delivery of aviation fuel. Working in a regulated, 24-hour operating environment, the Terminal Operator coordinates closely with vessel crews, pipeline control, maintenance personnel, contractors, and emergency-response partners to protect people, the environment, product quality, and critical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor and inspect storage tanks, pumps, valves, manifolds, filtration systems, meters, loading equipment, and terminal control and alarm systems.
- Coordinate product receipts and deliveries with pipeline control, confirming operating windows, flow paths, available tank capacity, pressure limits, and custody-transfer requirements.
- Perform quality rounds across the marine dock, tank farm, and pipeline areas, critically assessing equipment operation and identifying security, environmental, safety, and business concerns.
- Conduct field rounds, equipment inspections, tank gauging, inventory checks, water draws, scheduled or issue-driven product sampling, and required quality-control testing.
- Protect jet fuel quality and product segregation by following approved handling, filtration, sampling, documentation, and contamination-control procedures.
- Understand and apply client safety and environmental policies, procedures, and standards; recognize worksite hazards and apply appropriate controls.
- Maintain accurate operating logs, checklists, transfer records, incident reports, shift handovers and other administrative records.
- Support marine offloading from pre-transfer planning through line-up verification, communications, transfer monitoring, shutdown, and post-transfer reconciliation.
- Assist with vessel pre-arrival security and equipment checks, deploy messenger lines, tie up and release ships or barges, and operate a small skiff for debris removal or boom repairs.
- Issue or support safe-work permits and energy-isolation activities, including lockout/tagout, confined-space entry, hot work, and contractor controls, within assigned authority.
- Conduct safety observations and engage third-party contractors to support safe, compliant work while they are on site.
- Perform light equipment maintenance, adjustments, calibration, and lubrication, including start-up, shutdown, and basic troubleshooting of pumps, valves, motors, and related process equipment.
- Complete assigned routine work, including preventive-maintenance inspections, facility housekeeping, supply replenishment, shipping and receiving, inventory support, and record-keeping.
- Identify and respond to abnormal conditions, leaks, spills, odours, equipment deficiencies, security concerns, and product-quality issues; initiate shutdown and escalation when required.
- Actively participate in emergency response, including fire and spill response, drills, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
- Maintain demonstrated competence in all assigned job functions by reviewing and understanding new or revised procedures, manuals, and operating documentation.
- Assist with the creation and revision of procedures and with the development of work orders and Management of Change documentation.
- Follow all company procedures and applicable marine, pipeline, environmental, occupational health and safety, transportation, security, and aviation-fuel quality requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in a petroleum terminal, tank farm, pipeline, marine terminal, refinery, chemical plant, utility, or comparable process-operating environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to process safety, occupational health and safety, environmental protection, and strict procedural compliance.
- Ability to read and interpret operating procedures, safety data sheets, and equipment manuals.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to recognize and communicate abnormal equipment or process conditions.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a shift team.
- Basic computer proficiency, including control-system interfaces, electronic logs, maintenance systems, and standard office applications.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to obtain and maintain all required site-access, marine-security, and safety certifications.
- Ability to satisfy the fitness-for-duty requirements of a safety-sensitive position, including applicable pre-employment screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in process operations, power engineering, instrumentation, mechanical technology, or a related discipline.
- Experience with jet fuel or aviation-fuel quality programs, custody transfer, marine product transfer, pipeline interfaces, or terminal automation systems.
- Current training in first aid, WHMIS, transportation of dangerous goods, confined-space entry, fall protection, spill response, or incident command.
- Industrial emergency-response, firefighting, or rescue experience.
Working Conditions and Schedule
- Rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays; overtime and call-outs may be required.
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and may involve controlled exposure to noise, petroleum products, vapours, marine environments, and moving equipment.
- The position requires walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs and ladders, working at heights or near water, bending, and safely handling tools, hoses, and equipment.
- The operator must be able to respond promptly to alarms and emergencies and wear prescribed personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection and CSA-approved life jackets where required.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means each product movement is planned, verified, monitored, and documented; fuel quality and inventory are protected; abnormal conditions are addressed early; and work is completed without harm to people, the environment, or infrastructure. The Terminal Operator consistently demonstrates stop-work authority, disciplined procedure use, operational awareness, respectful teamwork, and continuous improvement.
How to Apply
Please submit your résumé and a brief cover letter describing your relevant operating experience, safety qualifications, and availability for rotating shift work. Applications will be reviewed as received.
